Men’s First Team Match Report

WHE Men 3-5 Indian Gymkhana 4’s – Away

Goal scorers: C. Foad, J. Turmaine (2)
Player of the Match: tbc

“Winchmore Hill & Enfield put up a valiant fight in a heated contest against Indian Gym, but despite their resilience, they succumbed to a 5-3 defeat. The match was filled with fiery moments, and a late spell of discipline issues that ultimately hampered Winchmore Hill’s efforts.

The game started brightly for Winchmore Hill, who took the lead in the 10th minute through Colin Foad. A perfectly timed pass into the D from Josh Cohen found Dr Foad, who made no mistake in putting his team 1-0 up. Indian Gymkhana responded shortly after when they were awarded a Penalty Flick following a foot on the line by Winchmore Hill’s Ross Davidson. Indian Gym made no mistake from the spot, levelling the score.

Moments later, Indian Gymkhana capitalised on a swift counter-attack and took the lead, with a strike through goalkeeper Josh Rider’s legs. Indian Gym once again edged further ahead. A stunning solo effort from their striker saw him dribble past three Winchmore Hill defenders before finishing in the side netting, giving Indian Gym a 4-1 advantage at the break. But before the half-time whistle, Winchmore Hill responded through Joe Turmaine as he blasted home a brilliant strike from a well-executed assist by Rob English, bringing the score back to 4-2.

The second half began with Winchmore Hill searching for a comeback. Joe Turmaine was again the man for the job, netting his second goal of the match from a short corner. With a pinpoint injection from his big brother Sam Turmaine, Joe’s strike gave Winchmore Hill hope, bringing the score to 4-3.

Things then took a dramatic turn when Winchmore Hill were reduced to 9 men for 2 minutes due to two green cards shown to Captain Ross Davidson and Vice Captain Dan Mather. Indian Gym were awarded a flick for Dan’s challenge – which they duly converted. 5-3.

Shortly after Ross and Dan returned, it was a very tense game with duals all over the field, and this lead to some more cards being shown to both teams. With both sides reduced to 10 men, the remainder of the match played out with less intensity. The score remained 5-3 in favour of Indian Gym, and the game ended in a somewhat more subdued fashion compared to the fiery exchanges earlier.

With this defeat, Winchmore Hill slipped to 3rd in the league standings. Despite a strong performance in the first half and moments of quality throughout the game, the side will need to regroup and refocus for their upcoming matches, which will be crucial in their pursuit of promotion. Winchmore Hill will take the positives from their effort and look ahead with determination.

Men’s Second Team Match Report

WHE Men 6-1 West Hampstead 9’s – Home

Goal scorers: D. Smith, H. Stone, L. Trevill (3)
Player of the Match: L. Trevill

“A warm welcome to 2025 for the men’s 2’s, back in action and raring to go against a familiar foe, West Hampstead 9’s.

Winchmore start in a new formation devised by Captain Cal, putting a great deal of pressure on the away team to go 1-0 up early on from star striker Luke – a fantastic deflected effort after a quick break masterminded by Dom. West Hampstead come straight back with a fantastic dribble around pretty much half the team and expertly finished. 1-1.

New January signings Harry and Guy (legally, they were already a part of the WHE setup) made an immediate impact, causing havoc in the D and Cal in an unfamiliar CAM role having the game of his life. Young winger Theo bettered his tally for 2024 with a single goal. 2-1. Luke managed to get himself his second, with a smart reverse 1-2 off of the goalkeepers pad for 3-1. Dom continued his fine form by sealing Winchmore’s 4th before the break for 4-1.

Half time rolls around and strong defensive performances for the two John’s and Mike kept out a pressing West Hampstead for a while, until the main man himself grabbed his hat trick after Cal weaved into the D, perfectly squaring it to Arran, who unselfishly gave the ball to Luke for a trademark Luke-In. 5-1. [It was actually Guy drilling the ball into the box for the hat-trick, this play was Harry’s goal].

Winch wrap up the scoring with January signing Harry getting a well deserved goal and his first appearance for the 2’s where they actually win, removing the Spursy feel from his ‘transfer’.

A pleasure as always facing West Hampstead with Dom buying the oppo team a jug and having lovely chats with the captain. Wishing them all the best for the rest of the season.

MOTM – Hat trick hero Luke

DOTD – Cal for his epic Aerial flop. Which travelled approximately 1cm. To quote umpire Gemma immediately after his aerial. “nope”.

Women’s Second Team Match Report

WHE Women 1-0 West Hampstead 7’s – Home

Goal Scorers: K. Allan
Player of the Match: Abbie Jones

First match back for the W2s and no frozen pitch did not mean it wasn’t freezing 🥶. We were delayed starting due to oppo GK equipment issues but did we stand idle getting cold? Oh no, Charlotte got us into a mini game after our drills and we then started the match all fired up and a little bit warmer at least…

We played the first 15 mins in their half. Our press stayed strong throughout the match. We had a few chances and just couldn’t squeeze through their congested D.

Second half we just kept knocking on the door and eventually scored through a short, Gemma taking the strong strike and Kareen dashing in to make the deflection, thumping it into the backboard. The boys on the sideline commented on high pitched screech of celebration (prob from me!)

We ploughed on, everyone just playing their part so well. Teams working within the team and some brilliant passing and interceptions by our mids and backs, battling to win every ball.

A nervous but controlled last five minutes saw us play the game out, desperate not to concede. A big shout out to all our mids and defenders but player of the match was given to Abbie Jones, who was just all over the game today and looked like she was going to be scoring!

Well done ladies.

No moose of the match today but Winfield remains with Alice as she forgot to bring him back today…
