Men’s First Team Match Report

WHE Men 2-1 West Herts 5’s – Home

Goal scorers: A. Scholefield, J. Turmaine
Player of the Match: M. Dray

“In a closely contested match, Winchmore Hill & Enfield M1s secured a 2-1 victory over West Hampstead M5s, maintaining their unbeaten streak and climbing to second in the league table.

The match started with an electric pace, with both teams creating numerous opportunities. Winchmore Hill drew first blood when Alex Scholefield converted a short corner, putting them ahead 1-0. The goal came after a questionable save attempt from the West Hampstead goalkeeper, and while Sam Turmaine claimed an assist, this remains unverified.
The remainder of the half saw chances exchanged at both ends, but neither side could find the back of the net again, leaving the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with both teams pressing for goals. West Hampstead equalized at 1-1 through a scrappy finish following another short corner. A mix-up between goalkeeper Josh Rider and centre-back Ollie Taplin allowed the ball to trickle in, much to the dismay of the Winchmore Hill defence.

However, the hosts responded well and regained their lead shortly after. Joe Turmaine scored what would be the winning goal, though it may have come off his foot in an unconventional manner. Josh Cohen claimed to have run the ball the entire length of the pitch prior to the goal, but this assertion lacked confirmation.

As the match intensified, tempers flared. West Hampstead received a deserved green card after a reckless challenge on Matt Dray, who was a standout performer throughout the match. Shortly after, Alex Scholefield also received a green card for a follow-through challenge, a decision that raised eyebrows among the spectators.

Winchmore Hill held on for a 2-1 victory, a result that solidifies their strong position in the league. Man of the Match honors went to Matt Dray, who made a significant impact in his first match of the season. The win keeps Winchmore Hill undefeated and sets them up nicely for upcoming challenges.

There once was a hockey team from Winchmore Hill,
Who passed through the Oppo with skill.

Women’s First Team Match Report

WHE Women 0-0 West Herts 2’s – Home

Goal Scorers: N/A
Player of the Match: H. Chapman & A. Martin

“It all started with Harriet breaking into the pitch and Guy then breaking back out immediately.
Playing West Herts W2s who were new into our league, we were ready to play our own game and move as a confident unit.

And that’s what we certainly did!

We played some lovely hockey from the defence to the forward line to create lots of chances throughout the match but couldn’t convert to a goal as their tall keeper kept them in the game. We had well deserved player of the match nominations for lots of people this week and the winners were Harriet and Amy for their constant battling for opportunities as well as helping us set a great press up front that the opposition were struggling to get past. Defensively, we had a brick wall that they had very few chances against. The game ended 0-0.

To create a bit of drama following the lack of goals, Gemma and B thought it would be fun to fall over willy nilly. Then Shell dramatically stormed into the D with lots of space after a free hit only to realise she’d forgotten the rules and hadn’t gone 5 first.

Honorable Mention to Lisa for some classic umpiring.”

Women’s Second Team Match Report

WHE Women 2-0 Old Merchant Taylors 5’s – Away

Goal Scorers: S. Gleeson, a poached goal originally shot by A. Rayson
Player of the Match: H. Cody

The day started badly, when our four o’clock push back was delayed half an hour due to a “red card” incident in a previous game. The 2s, currently on a winning streak, began the game with gusto having Karen Gray.

The first talking point: a beautiful cross from Charlotte behind the goalkeeper for Kareen to battle with 3 defenders and the keeper to definitely, 100% send the ball across the line. Unfortunately, the umpires did not agree and with no VAR at the ground the score stayed at nil-nil.

Later on in the first half, Sula casually, definitely, 100% crossed the line into the D before the ball dribbled all the way into goal. Stopped time, and a conversation between the umpires and the score was 1-0.

The second half started with a 20 minute stint in the opposition’s 25 and consistent pressure on their defence. But with no goals to be seen until finally, in the 60th minute, a cracking cross from Charlotte to Anna who shot into the far corner for a goal that definitely, 100% wasn’t poached on the line!

Beating out fierce competition from Kareen; Moose of the Match goes to Hannah for her spectacularly broken water bottle!

Bob’s your uncle, Hannah’s your Man of the Match (with many honourable mentions) and a three-match winning streak for the 2s!
