Week Eight Roundup – 2024

A mixed bag of results for Winchmore Hill & Enfield Hockey this weekend!

For all matches occurring on 16th November 2024.

Men’s First Team Match Report

WHE Men 2-2 Ashford (Middlesex) 2’s – Away

Goal scorers: C. Foad, J. Wilson
Player of the Match: J. Rider

“Winchmore goes away to Ashford looking to set aside their frustrations from the previous week. With a thin squad full of forwards, the concussed Dan sets the team up with a high press. Ashford proves to be an organised outfit taking advantage of the hectic start by winchmore winning a few short corners. Despite some near chances by Winchmore, the opening goal comes for Ashford through a counter attack followed by a second from a short corner.

Going into half time trailing by 2, Winchmore have a word with themselves and go back out determined. Winchmore show a huge improvement in the second half showing greater composure and possession. This change is rewarded with a goal for Winchmore through a cracking reverse strike by Drew. Winchmore keep this momentum with Ashford continuing to threaten on the counter. Winchmore proceeded to level the score at 2-2 through a well worked short corner routine knocked in by the ever clinical Colin.

Despite some close calls from both sides the score remained level for a final score of 2-2.

MOTM was Josh for a solid performance in goal
DOTD was Harry for mistaking Zach for Scho”

Men’s Second Team Match Report

WHE Men 5-2 Richmond Stags – Home

Goal scorers: S. Milsome, A. Tatla, L. Trevill (2)
Player of the Match: R. English

“A cold grey day for Winchmore 2’s last league game of 2024, don’t worry, we plan to have some friendlies and I might write a match report for those to keep you all entertained whilst you miss us 😊

Luke opened the scoring after chasing down a classic Dom aerial* and tapping in for our first. Richmond equalised with some good dribbling and their shot unfortunately trickling in past our solid Linus after 3 saves in a row. 5 mins later it was that man again, chasing down Ellis for top goalscorer (I think catching up with him now – cba to check teamo stats to confirm)** getting his second of the game with a little dink through his own legs. Classy.

Winch got their third with young Arran smashing in a shot to the bottom corner after a lifted ball was picked out of the air by Rob. 3-1 at the break.

Second half comes around and Richmond applied a lot more pressure, scoring from a deflection on a short corner.

Richmond player went 1-1 with Linus and managed to get the ball passed him. Here we go, 3-3.. BUT NO. John Symons speeding back through the D to put the ball wide before getting intimate with our own goal. Doing his best Phil Babb impression (YouTube it for a vivid picture). More worried about his collar bone that his manhood, he got back up and carried on to live in the moment of his heroics.

Winchmore added their 4th goal through a low hard and quite possibly intentional drag flick from Simon Milsome, with the only player being more angry about the goal being himself, because his flick could have been better. A goal is a goal! The final goal came from a frankly gorgeous move from Mike, Captain Cal, Rob, Dom down the right, triangular one touch passing passing with Dom getting the goal – Captain cal missed the goal as he was on his backside off the pitch after stacking it on the opponents stick..

5-2 win for Winch! Come on the lads!

MOTM – Rob English – Shall be addressed as champion going forward.

DOTD – All buzzing with the result, we didn’t actually do a DOTD. I’m sure admin will edit this to add his thoughts

as written by C. Hunt

Calum was right. Admin does have thoughts.
Donkey of the Day goes to Calum for writing the match report, and also getting some key details wrong (and not bothering to check Teamo), which are corrected as per:
*This was actually an assist by S. Milsome. Not a ‘classic Dom aerial’, although he is classic in them.

**L. Trevill was the Top Goalscorer prior to the game, Trevill has furthered the lead.

The final note was C. Hunt continuously calling himself ‘Captain Cal’.

Women’s First Team Match Report

WHE Women 1-1 East London 4’s – Home

Goal Scorers: G. Gatting, V. Greensmith
Player of the Match: N. Cohen

“It was a game of two halves. However the drama started before the match even began. B and Shell managed to scare an estate agents along the way and Anna managed to take a wrong turning. Oh Shell also took a wrong turning in the changing rooms and almost used the showers as the toilet. And interesting start to game day. And it didn’t stop there.

The first half of the game went really well for us. With some wonderful quick passes up the sides and a few near misses on the posts, Vicky finally managed to get the ball past the goalkeeper from an impossible angle. Followed by a second goal from Gem from an amazing frist strike from a short corner. The half ended 2-1 and things were looking great for the second half of the match. Amy even remembered to bring the squashies out of her bag for half time energy.

Second half. Things got interesting. Forces outside of our control were in play. Shell made some amazing tackles but unfortunately one of them somehow ended in a flick. However our TLK was ready as ever for the opposition. An amazing save and an even better celebratory dance, winning Nic PotM. Very well deserved. We also found out that Vicky cannot stop the balls on the floor but can stop them a stick length above her head. Amy jinxed the team before the game stating ‘we always get carded at this pitch’. We almost got away with no cards in the game, however Shell managed to recived a green card towards the end of the second half of the game. We blame the jinx for this. We would also like to say welcome back to Sarah’s feet. They were away for a couple of weeks and were very much missed.

Unfortunately things did not go our way in the second half but we did not stop fighting. We never gave up. We played as a team and never put our heads down. It just wasn’t our day today.

PotM nic for her save and celebratory dance.
DoD Shell for taking a short corner on the wrong line.

However all ended with smiles on our faces with Tim Hortons to finish the day.”
