Men’s Second Team Match Report

WHE M2’s 4-0 Southgate 4’s

The missed opportunity to take away points in the last match away to West Hampstead M9’s, who unexpectedly brought Winchmore’s Mens 2’s eight match unbeaten run to a sudden halt, was still fresh on the minds. Winchmore were determined to not have a repeat of the same at home in a local derby against Southgate M7’s as Winchmore continue to challenge for top honours in their respective league division.

Winchmore started the match brightly, as within a few minutes Team Captain Wayne, latched onto a loose ball just inside Southgate’s half to break away ahead of the pack, leading to a one-on-one with Southgates keeper, aiming his shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal, only to miss by the narrowest of margins to the relief of Southgate.

However, it wasn’t long before Wayne was back in action again and scored a classic training drill goal, having received a visionary pass into the middle of the D with pressure from a tightly marked Southgate Defender on his heels, a quick turn on the strong side and shot on goal to the bottom right corner to score his second goal of the season.

Not too long after Winchmore’s first goal, another goal came from a textbook counter attack, with Wayne picking up the ball just outside Winchmore’s D, carrying the ball out of the danger zone towards the right flank, where he passed to midfielder Tom, who was ahead at full pelt, who then carried the ball down the right flank deep into Southgate territory. Additional support came in from Right Back Luke O who then took over, finishing the counter attack with a fine goal and his first of the season.

At half time, the formation was changed and within the first 10 minutes of the second half, Southgate were gaining momentum, dominating much of the play in Winchmore’s half. However, the dust soon settled as Winchmore adjusted to the change in formation and began to re-assert their dominance all over the pitch.

It wasn’t long before Winchmore was on the score sheet again after a great solo goal from Luke T, having picked up the ball in the far left corner near the baseline in Southgate’s half, then dribbled past three Southgate player’s along the baseline heading towards goal, then beating the Southgate keeper to score and keep himself in contention for the Men’s 2’s top scorer accolade.

The final goal of the match came from Chairman Dom who unleashed a powerful shot on goal leaving Southgate’s keeper with no chance.

As testament to the fantastic all-round performance from every player in the team to come away with the 4-0 win and 3rd clean sheet of the season, there were no less than 9 different players who were nominated for Man of the Match. However, the player who got the most votes was Dom, who now has collected his 3rd Man of the Match this season.

The Men’s 2’s now head into the Christmas break and hope to continue their fine run of form when they re-commence in the new year.
