Men’s First Team Match Report

West Hampstead 7’s 1-4 WHE Men 1’s

The M1s travelled to Brent Cross for a rearranged fixture against West Hampstead 7s. With a strong squad at their disposal, Winchmore started well with James Begg opening the scoring, crashing the ball through the keeper on reverse stick from a narrow angle.

But then for a while it was an all too familiar story – missed chances, no one on the back post as shots/crosses flew just wide, attackers trying to dribble through defenders on the edge of the D, and at halftime Winchmore held a narrow 1-0 lead when they should have been at least 3-up.

Soon after the break, West Hampstead converted a penalty corner to make it 1-1 and it was time for Winchmore to show their mettle. Quick passing from the push back, and Winchmore regained the lead with a well worked goal ably converted by the impressive Jack Wilson after great work from Joe Turmaine.

Disallowed goals at each end were then followed by two more for real, Joe Turmaine getting his own reward after his earlier assist, and Harry Stone back on the score sheet as Winchmore ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

A fine second half performance and 3 points in the bag, keeps Winchmore firmly in the hunt for promotion, level on points with two other teams at the top of Div 5NW.

MOTM: Adam for a commanding all round display in central midfield
DOTD: Dom for deciding a parkrun would be a good way to warm up in the morning, but then pulling a calf muscle and missing the game

Women’s Second Team Match Report

Southgate 5’s 3-1 WHE Women 2’s

The match started with energy after our break, but unfortunately Southgate matched it and scored a quick goal in the first ten minutes. However, we quickly came back and Alice scored a goal to attempt to take the game back. We kept our composure as another goal was scored by Southgate in the first half, making some beautiful passes around the back with Lorna in the middle. Our control was even better in the second half and we did a great job at looking for both short and some long accurate passes going to a player, with only a few clearing all of the players.

In the end, after many failed short corners on their behalf, the score was 3-1 to Southgate. All in all it was an excellent start to the new year with some amazing play, well done Winchmore!!
