“The Women’s 1s are starting this season afresh – new captains, new squad, and a brand-new formation.
Our first league fixture of the season saw us travel deep into South West London to face recently relegated Wanderers.
Lined up in our new shape, Winchmore Hill started the stronger side. The sight of our defensive press was a thing of beauty, with relentless tracking and movement across the pitch as the ball switched from side to side. Our pressure paid off when new squad member Anna Rayson battled hard to score the opening goal.
Wanderers responded during a spell of pressure, managing to net two goals. But Winchmore refused to sit back, making full use of every attacking opportunity, and Pippa Deane calmly slotted home our second goal to level the score.
Heading into the final five minutes, we were 2–3 down. Heads did not drop. Instead, Winchmore earned a late short corner, and Sam Deane struck beautifully into the bottom left corner to secure a dramatic equaliser.
I’m so proud of this team today. For our first match, the intensity was incredibly high, and we worked tirelessly to stay in the game. Every single player gave their all, and we fully deserved to take something from this fixture. Wanderers may not be pleased, but it was satisfying to show that we’re not a team to be walked over – even against recently relegated opposition.
