“It was a grey dry day down at the southbury cauldron for the clubs first mens cup game of the season against an unknown Wanderers M3 side, selected team was strong with a mix of first and second team players giving us some good substitution options if needed, with the buzz of John’s drone overhead the game whistle started what would be a hard fought game for us to win, we sat comfortably to start passing the ball around across the back line and probing up the wings with real composure, Olly would be proud, there was a sense from their forwards that they knew they were gonna have to put a decent shift in to stop us keeping the ball, when they did have possession they pushed hard but to no avail, the defensive line and keeper were keeping them shut down as usual, their best chances were off the short corners they had, thanks to the drone footage we can see they got close but no close enough, after about 20 mins of solid work from both teams we found ourselves up the right side of the pitch and as if it was the Wednesday night training session the ball was fired into Jack’s great run across the D, with a great deflection to Joe sitting perfectly at the P spot to nestle it passed the keeper to take is 1-0 up, special mention to a slightly wide deflection also by Joe that looked like it was top right corner but sadly it was slightly wide and caught up in the goal net hence the cheers from players only to be rejected by the umpire, the first half finished with a potential short corner for the wanderers as the clubs returning super signing pulled out of retirement Neil Adams (I’m writing the match report so ill say what i want) swung and missed in our D but thankfully as no one was around the umpires let it go to wrap up the first half.
With the Wanderers a goal down but definitely not out they pushed hard in the second half, they had some great shots saved from our legendary keeper Josh, and plenty more short corners for us to practise defending against, it wasn’t until Colin with a bit of stick skill and a lovely bottom corner placed ball took us 2-0 up that wanderers broke our composure and scored a short corner, worryingly not long after that there was another dodgy decision that led to yet another short corner against us and with a similar outcome so 2-2 is where we found ourselves, the game then heated up and the tackles became a little questionable which led to one of wanderers players receiving a green card although there was some delay in working out which player the umpire actually wanted off the pitch and definitely wasn’t our player Alex, during this time we could not find a way in, fitness and stamina was starting to show even though our great subs were doing a good job, time was running out and and I’m sure some of the players were starting to think about how they would beat the keeper when it comes to shuttle time, sadly these great spectacles of hockey skills which would have looked great on drone cam were dashed when Joe slipped the ball to Colin to yet again put it past their keeper and take us to 3-2 with just minutes to go, Wanderers didn’t give up and kept going with yet more great shots but it was too little too late, the whistle went and we were threw, great game from all our players and helped by the the twos who looked competent playing in a higher league, well done lads roll on the next cup game.
